Vitamins are a group of organic compounds that poultry require in small quantities. Despite the low requirement levels, vitamins are essential for normal body functions, growth, and reproduction. A deficiency of one or more vitamins can lead to a number of diseases or syndromes.
Vitamins are divided into two categories: Fat-soluble and water-soluble. Fat-soluble vitamins are A, D, E, and K. The water-soluble vitamins include vitamin C and the B vitamins. Vitamin A is required for normal growth and development of epithelial tissue (skin and the linings of the digestive, reproductive, and respiratory tracts) and reproduction. The B vitamins include vitamin B12, biotin, niacin, pantothenic acid, pyridoxine, riboflavin, and thiamin.
Vitamin A: Is necessary for support of growth, health and life of all major animal species. Vitamin A and its derivatives, the retinoids, have a great influence on organ development, cell proliferation and cell differentiation and their deficiency can lead to multiple disabilities. Adequate amount of dietary vitamin A is necessary to help maintain resistance to stress and disease. Reduction in Vitamin A can lead to reduced immune response.
Vitamin D3 : Increases plasma levels of calcium and phosphorous that increases normal mineralization of bones and other body functions It is also known that vitamin D3 is not only important for mineralization and skeletal growth but also has many other roles in the regulation of immune system, cancer prevention, in the metabolism of foreign chemicals and in cellular development. Vitamin D3 is required for the embryonic development of chicks
Vitamin E : Acts as a natural antioxidant and protects polyunsaturated fats in the body from oxidation. Enhances immune mechanisms of the body.
Vitamin C : Possess potent anti-stress property. Acts as an Immunity Booster by developing resistance against infections.
